Your Volcanic and Heritage Scenic Flight Experience
Mountain Air is the premier scenic flight operator in the Tongariro area. Based at Mt Ruapehu we specialize in scenic flights around Tongariro National Park Dual World Heritage Area. We have operated from the Chateau Airport at Mt Ruapehu for 18 years and currently operate two single engined Cessna aircraft. Our main base is at the Chateau Airfield but we also operate from Turangi, Taupo and Flat Hills.

Scenic Flights
We operate scenic flights to a wide range of locations in New Zealand but specialize in scenic flights around the spectacular volcanoes of Tongariro National Park Dual World Heritage Area. Our shortest flight of 15 minutes duration is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing around the northern volcanoes of Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. However, by far our most popular flight, is the Volcanic Explorer, which takes in the awesome views of the summits of all three mountains (weather permitting). This is a 35 minute flight which also passes over the filming sites of the Peter Jackson film The Lord of the Rings. This journey takes in geothermal areas, beautiful views of the lakes in the area and Lake Taupo, old dormant volcanoes and young volcanoes still in various stages of activity. This is a truly awe inspiring flight and one which even on days when the mountain tops are obscured by clouds, provides breathtaking views and sights of great interest.

About Us
Mountain Air is owned by Bhrent and Kathy Guy. Bhrent has been operating scenic flights in the region since 1990 and has a background in geology and environmental studies to support his wide knowledge of the area. Our main Airfield is a high country sheep station at the base of Mt Ruapehu at the intersection of State Highway 47 and State Highway 48. Although we operate only two aircraft with a passenger set capacity of eight, we have the ability to charter other aircraft to cater for large groups should this be required. We also have an office at Turangi Airfield with toilet facilities to cater for our coach and group scenic flight transfers around the district. We frequently pick up passengers from Taupo Airport for a absolutely memorable flight around Lake Taupo and the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park
