Murchison Travel Guide

Murchison accommodation, Murchison activities and attractions, Murchison maps, transportation to and around Murchison - the ALL NEW Jasons Murchison Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Murchison.

Located on the Buller Gorge Heritage Highway, this farming settlement provides an ideal base for an outdoors holiday. It was originally born of gold fever, and in 1929 was almost completely destroyed by the Murchison Earthquake. Today, its setting on the banks of the Buller River has made it a paradise for fishing, rafting and kayaking, and there is also jetboating and gold panning. Horse treks take riders through beautiful countryside and native bush, and hunting and hiking are popular in the surrounding area.

Other activities include caving and mountain biking. State Highway 6 to the West Coast follows the river and traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The town lies at the southern gateway to Kahurangi National Park. To the east lies Nelson Lakes National Park.
