The
Waikato's oldest settlement and the meeting place of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, Ngaruawahia is the heart of Waikato Maoridom. Turangawaewae Marae (meeting place) is the official residence of the reigning Maori King. The present pa dates from 1921.
Taupiri Village lies just northwards, and the ancestral burial grounds of local Maori lie at the base of Taupiri Mountain. There are excellent views from the summit, although walkers must observe proper etiquette near the graves. There are natural
hot springs near Ngaruawahia at Waingaro.
