Pahi Travel Guide

Pahi is an unspoilt coastal retreat located 7km from Paparoa township and 12km from the renowned Matakohe Kauri Museum. Visitors to the museum can immerse themselves in the story of the kauri – its timber and gum – in the context of colonial life in Northland.

The settlement of Pahi is almost entirely encircled by tidal seawater and is a popular departure point for fishing. Fresh fish may be bought straight from the boats or you can try your luck fishing from the wharf for snapper or kahawai. Flounder and mullet may be netted, and Pacific oysters and New Zealand green-lipped mussels can be picked at low tide.

Attractions:
  • Matakohe Museum
This award-winning museum focuses on the role the kauri played in shaping the lives of Northland's pioneer gum diggers and loggers. Displays include mock-ups of kauri dams, bullock trains, wooden sleds and pit-saw operations. There is also a huge collection of kauri gum containing some beautifully crafted pieces.
  • Pahi Reserve
In the public reserve is a spectacular Moreton Bay fig tree – one of the world's finest specimens and among New Zealand's 10 most notable trees.
