The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, located only minutes from the centre of Oamaru in the Waitaki District, provides Day and Night viewing options. The Little Blue Penguins, the world's smallest, nest in quantities not seen anywhere else in New Zealand. With 600 identified penguins, day or night, you can be sure to see something unique. Day Tours allow you to enter the breeding area and view penguins in the natural nesting environment (underground). In the evening, you sit in a purpose-built grandstand while only metres in front of you the penguins will come ashore, climb the rocks, and enter the colony. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is open every night of the year, and closed only during the day on Christmas Day, ANZAC Day (25 April) and Good Friday. Bring warm clothes all times of the year, and photographs are not allowed in the evening, and only without a flash during the day. The Centre opens at 9.30am each day, and closes about 90 minutes after dusk. Qualmark endorsed visitor activity. Green Glove certified 2008.
