The popular beach resort of Ohope is located on a 13km stretch of sandy shore between the Whakatane Heads and the entrance to Ohiwa Harbour. Ohope is best known for the stunning Ohope Beach, and there is no shortage of things to do here, both along the coast and in the region's inland waterways. Swimming, beaches, walks, boating, fishing, sea kayaking, hiking, hunting, jetboating, whitewater rafting, horse riding, golf and tennis can all be enjoyed in the Ohope district.
The bustling township of
Whakatane, with its shops and cafés, is a short drive over the hill at the western end of the beach. Visit the Whakatane Museum to learn about the Maori and European settlement of the area and for information about
Whakaari (White Island), the smouldering volcano visible from Ohope Beach. Also visible from the Ohope coast is Moutohora (Whale Island). To the east of Ohope is the township of
Opotiki and beyond that the unspoilt coastline of East Cape. To the south is magnificent Te Urewera National Park, a huge reserve of native bush that can be visited on a day trip from Ohope.
