  • Tane Mahuta
This massive kauri tree is part of Waipoua Forest, the largest remaining remnant of the far north's native kauri forest. One of the world's most ancient trees, it is thought to be between 1200 and 2000 years old.
  • Arai te Uru Reserve
West of Omapere along Signal Station Road, this reserve enjoys magnificent vistas over the harbour and sand dunes. Paikia hill, further up SH12, is another beautiful spot.
  • Sand tobogganing
Serveral companies at nearby Opononi offer visitors the chance to go tobogganing on the Hokianga's massive sand dunes.
  • Rawene
Charming Rawene sits at the edge of the Hokianga Harbour and is well known for its craft shops and cafés - some perched on stilts over the water. The town's historic buildings include Clendon House, the former residence of James Clendon.
  • Walks
Walks in the region include the Hokianga Track (8km, 3hr) which begins from Hokianga's South Head and leads along Kaikai Beach. The Waipoua Coastal Walkway (50km, 16hrs) continues south of the track to Maunganui Bluff and the Kai Iwi lakes.
