The seaside resort of Opononi lies on the southern shore of the lovely
Hokianga Harbour, just a few kilometres from
Omapere. The settlement gained national fame in the 1950s when it was visited by a friendly dolphin. Named Opo after the village, the dolphin loved playing to the crowds and let children ride on its back. A memorial to Opo is on the shore opposite the Opononi pub.
Opononi has facilities for fishing, boating, swimming, windsurfing and pony trekking. Boogy boards can be hired to slide down the sand dunes at North Head, and there are some popular walks and hikes in the area. The town is near the Waipoua Forest to the south, and the historic town of
Rawene to the north-east.
