Things to Do in Opononi

• Tane Mahuta
  This massive kauri tree is part of Waipoua Forest, the largest remaining remnant of the Far North's native kauri forest. One of the world's most ancient trees, it's thought to be between 1200 and 2000 years old.
• Sand tobogganing
  Serveral companies at Opononi offer visitors the chance to go tobogganing on the Hokianga's massive sand dunes at the North Head.
• Rawene
  Charming Rawene sits at the edge of the Hokianga Harbour and is well known for its craft shops and cafés - some perched on stilts over the water. The town's historic buildings include Clendon House, the former residence of James Clendon.
• Walks
  A popular walk is the Waiotemarama Track, which starts 8km southeast of Opononi and leads through the beautiful native bush past a waterfall and small swimming hole. Another lovely walk is the half-hour climb up Mount Whiria, an old pa site which enjoys wonderful views of the harbour. The longer Hokianga-Waipoua Coastal Track (50km, 16hrs) is popular with more ambitious walkers and leads from Hokianga's South Head to the Kai Iwi Lakes. The Six Foot Track (near Okopako Lodge on Mountain Road) accesses many of the Waima Range walks.
