Things to Do in Opotiki

• White Island
  New Zealand's only active volcanic island is located 48km offshore, and has an impressive gannet colony. Boat, plane and helicopter tours are available from the town and it's possible to walk right up to the main crater.
• Adventure Sports
  Options include kayaking on the Waioeka River with Waioeka Kayaks and horse trekking with Tirohanga Beach Treks and Bay of Plenty Horse Treks (Maraenui). Jetboating trips (Motu River Jetboat) run down the wild Motu River, which flows through the hills east of Opotiki.
• Hiona St Stephen's Anglican Church
  This historic church was built in 1864 by the Reverend Carl Volkner. He was murdered in his church a year later after local Maori found he had acted as a government spy.
• Opotiki Museum
  Located at 123 Church Street, the museum specialises in agricultural implements and also contains domestic and military bric-a-brac, and early photos.
• Hukutaia & Waioeka Domains
  The town's two main reserves. Hukutaia has one of the country's best collections of native and endangered plants, and contains an ancient puriri tree thought to be about 2000 years old. There is a good lookout over Waioeka Valley and some short rainforest tracks.
• Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve
  Located east of the town en route to Gisborne, this beautiful bush-clad reserve offers some excellent walking trails.
