The small seaside town of Opunake calls itself home to one of
Taranaki's best surf beaches. This beach is a major draw card to surfers, swimmers and holiday makers, meaning the town's population swells considerably in the summer months. The town is located on the Surf Highway 45. Follow this highway to
Hawera or
New Plymouth, and you will come across some more amazing surf beaches.
Opunake was settled in the 1880s, and murals throughout the town celebrate the town’s history and the importance of its links with the sea. The Opunake walkway is very pleasant and takes you around the lake, past a couple of cemeteries and across the beach. Along this walk you will have some amazing coastal and mountain views. There is also a local 18-hole golf course with many trees, making for an interesting course.
