Southern Lakes Region
A huge and diverse region, encompassing the mountains and forests of Mt Aspiring National Park, the lakes and open rock and tussock lands of Central Otago and the wildlife haven that is the Otago coast.
- Mt Aspiring National Park
A World Heritage Area of vast, glacial-sculpted wilderness. The central focus of the park is the classic, alpine horn shaped Mt Aspiring (3027m), a challenge for the most experienced climbers. Throughout the park long glaciated valleys and alpine passes form excellent, multi-day hiking routes. Popular are the Young/Wilkin, Rees/Dart and Matukituki valleys. The Routeburn Track, a Great Walk, crosses from the park into neighbouring Fiordland National Park. Visitor activities include climbing and hiking (guided and independent options), ski mountaineering, scenic flights, jetboating, rafting, nature tours, canyoning (in the Routeburn Valley) and short walks.
- Queenstown
Queenstown is well known for the adrenalin-stirring adventure activities on offer within its stunning mountain environment. Many take place in conservation areas and are carefully monitored to ensure natural values are protected. Options include bungy jumping, rafting, jetboating, mountain biking and heli-skiing. Three snow resorts, Coronet Peak Ski Area, The Remarkables Ski Area and Cardrona Alpine Resort, are within an hour's drive of town. For more leisurely options, short walks and nature tours explore a stunning range of natural and historic features.
- Central Otago
Central Otago has a distinctive, stark landscape of rocky mountain ranges, open tussock valleys, dry, continental climate and gold mining history. A special attraction for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders is the historic and scenic 150km Otago Central Rail Trail. Gold mining history from the 1800s is preserved in the Otago Goldfields Park, notably at Kawarau Bridge, the Arrowtown Chinese Settlement and St Bathans.
- Otago Peninsula and the Catlins
Otago's east coast is a wildlife haven. The world's only mainland royal albatross colony is established on Otago Peninsula, one hour from Dunedin city. Colonies of the rare yellow-eyed penguin live on the Peninsula and the Catlins Coast, along with sea lions, fur seals and a multitude of seabirds and wading birds. Dolphins and whales visit Dunedin Harbour. Short walks, wildlife cruises and guided nature tours are available.
