Things to Do in Otaki

• Tararua Forest Park
  Otaki Forks is the main western entrance to this rugged park, which is popular with hikers. There are shorter walks from Boielle Flat, and a basic campsite at Schoolhouse Flat. Walks in this area range from about 30 minutes to 3.5 hours, and take in the remnants of abandonned logging and farming sites. Longer tracks lead to the huts.
• Adventure Activities
  The Tararua Recreation Centre offers a host of adventure activities on the river and in the park, including rafting, abseiling waterfalls, kayaking, climbing, canyoning and mountain biking. The centre is open October to April.
• Kapiti Coast
  This beautiful stretch of coast is known for its sweeping beaches and for Kapiti Island, a bird sanctuary which provides refuge for rare native species such as kakariki (parakeets), kaka (bush parrots), bellbirds, fantails, weka and tui.
