The lakeside town of Otematata sprung up in 1958 as a construction base for the Benmore and Aviemore dams. Today, the dams remain as lakes and huge water playgrounds, and although the local houses also remain, many have been turned into holiday homes as Otematata is a popular spot with visitors in all seasons. In the warmer months, go swimming, kayaking, boating or waterskiing; in the cooler months head for the slopes of the nearby skifields or try one of the nearby walks.
