Owhango lies halfway between
Taumarunui and
National Park, exactly on latitude 39 south. Dense bush, sparkling rivers and the North Island's beautiful national parks surround this strong farming area. Owhango is ideally situated for exploring the magnificent Whanganui and
Tongariro National Parks and is the closest town to the 42 Traverse trail.
There are an endless number of activities to enjoy in this pristine area, including skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, fishing, hunting, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. The rivers in the area are not only stunningly relaxing, but are also full of trout and make a great spot for a day's fishing.
The town of Owhango sprang up at the beginning of the 1900s when a railway was put through and timber milling became an important industry. The name, Owhango, literally means the 'place of wheezing noises'.
