Paraparaumu is the main town on the
Kapiti Coast. Once a holiday destination for Wellingtonians, it is now a thriving residential area and dormitory town for many who work in
Wellington. The large Coastlands Shoppingtown attracts shoppers from throughout the Wellington region, and Paraparaumu is also known for its antique outlets. Overlooking Paraparaumu is a large white statue of Our Lady of Lourdes which can be reached by a walking track.
Just 4km to the west is
Paraparaumu Beach with its foreshore recreational park and world-class golf course. Paraparaumu is also handy to the the beautiful wilderness areas of the Tararua Ranges and Kapiti Island. Activities in the area include an emu farm, horse riding, historic tramcars, cheese tasting, a chocolate shop and a veteran car museum. Canoeing, kayaking and whitewater rafting are available on the Otaki River to the north, and for the adventurous, there is river rafting, bushwalking, hiking, farm-biking and a high-speed fly by wire.
