Queenstown has two highly entertaining canyoning experiences: 12 Mile Delta, 10min from Queenstown and Routeburn, 20min from Glenorchy in the Mount Aspiring National Park.
Both offer an aquatic style to canyoning with challenging aspects on wire cable zip lines over the canyon, to intense abseiling or rappelling options. The 12 Mile is a high-wall canyon with an easy 5min access walk. Routeburn Canyoning starts with a 20min walk along the world-famous Routeburn Track and is a more descending canyon.
What makes canyoning an appealing new choice in an adventure activity is that you can attempt what the guides are conveying. After safety briefing and demonstration, you step up and perform the task. This is hugely rewarding and very interactive. Variations in slides, small to large size and exhilarating rock jumps to refresh you along the way. Canyoning delivers a mental challenge rather than an overly physical one. The equipment provided allows you to access and enjoy otherwise forbidden territory.
Both canyons are considered to be of exceptional international standard for the canyoning terrain traversed and the guiding experience provided. The activities performed in the canyon are dynamic and are developing each year. They have fast become a 'must do' on the Queenstown adventure circuit.
Look out for the new canyon which opens this summer, Earnslaw Heli Canyon. Over 450 metres of vertical descent, 6 hours of intense rappelling in small private groups.
