The people of Ranfurly are making the most of their heritage by ensuring the art deco architecture is the popular attraction it should be. Many of the buildings are from the streamlined Jazz Age of the 1930s, drawing people internationally with an interest in art deco. The buildings are fascinating and very different to what you will find elsewhere.
When the
Central Otago railway line was constructed, it cut the Maniototo Plain in half and Ranfurly became the central point of the line. It soon became an important service town in the 1930s and many new buildings were developed, taking on the art deco style.
This style is distinctive with decorative motifs, spaced bands, angular patters and the building are constructed with concrete, plaster or bricks.
