Situated in the Inangahua River valley between the Victoria and Paparoa Ranges, historic Reefton is the
West Coast's only inland town. It was established around 1870 at the height of the goldrush and in 1888 became the first place in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public supply of electricity.
Trout fishing and swimming can be enjoyed in the Inangahua River. Surrounding Reefton is the Victoria Conservation Park, with its remnants of gold and coal mining sites, and there are many fine walks in the region. South of the town is
Greymouth, a former goldmining centre, with its museum, galleries and adventure activities.
