Hemmed in by orchards, the
Central Otago town of Roxburgh was founded on sheepfarming and the gold industry but today is known as a fruit growing area. Stone fruits, strawberries, apples, raspberries and pears are all grown here. Fishing, walking and visiting the orchards and vineyards are just some of the attractions of this beautiful part of the country.
Places of interest around Roxburgh include the Gorge Creek Monument to the gold miners who died in the 1863 snows on Old Man Range, and the Lake Onslow fishery, one of Otago's best. North of Roxburgh is the former goldmining centre of
Alexandra, with its walking and mountainbike trails, and south of Roxburgh is
Lawrence, Central Otago's original gold rush hub.
