Things to Do in Roxburgh

Things to see and do in Roxburgh, Roxburgh highlights, Roxburgh activities and attractions, and points of interest in Roxburgh - the ALL NEW Jasons Roxburgh Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Roxburgh.

  • Roxburgh Dam
Built in 1962, this power station is the country's second largest (Clyde, upriver, is the largest). The lookout point gives a superb view over the turquoise waters of Lake Roxburgh.
  • Teviot Valley
This fertile valley is home to some of the world's best stone fruit and salmon fishing.
  • Recreation Areas
Pinder's Pond is popular for swimming, and the Roxburgh Hydro Dam has a large picnic area and boat access to the lake.
  • Lawrence
This historic gold rush town was once the centre of frenzied activity after gold was discovered at nearby Gabriels Gully. The town's Goldfields Museum on Ross Place captures the ambience of those heady days and rents out gold pans for those who want to try their luck.
  • Gabriel's Gully
There are several interesting walks near Lawrence. These include the track from Gabriels Gully to Jacobs Ladder. The gully was the site of a frantic gold rush in July 1861, after gold was discovered in the Tuapeka River by Gabriel Read. The top of Jacob's Ladder gives a good view of the gully, now filled with gold tailings some 20cm deep.
  • Historic Buildings
These include the Moa Seed Farm homestead and stables and, south of Roxburgh, Millers Flat and the Teviot Woolshed Ruins. North of the town is Fruitlands Gallery, a characterful old pub dating back to 1866, which is now a licensed café selling local arts and crafts. A kilometre away is Mitchells Cottage, a restored stone cottage built by Shetland Island stonemasons.
  • Old Man Rock
This 27m tall stone obelisk west of Fruitlands gives its name to the Old Man Range.
