Things to Do in Russell

• Pompallier
  New Zealand's oldest surviving Roman Catholic building was built in 1841-42 by Louis Perret for pioneer Bishop Jean Francois Pompallier. Constructed of pise de terre (rammed earth) on the ground floor and pan de bois (rammed earth panels in a kauri framework) above, this elegant two-storey house is now managed by the NZ Historic Places Trust.
• Christ Church
  Built in 1836, this is the country's oldest church still in use today. The facade shows sign of musket holes dating from conflicts between local Maori and European settlers. The graveyard contains memorials of many Maori and European who were prominent in New Zealand's early history.
• Fishing
  The town is a popular centre for game fishing, with cruise boats, charters and fishing trips departing from Russell wharf.
• Flagstaff (Maiki) Hill
  This historic landmark offers panoramic views over the Bay of Islands. The flagstaff is the fifth to be placed on this hill. A plaque explains why Maori Ngapuhi chief, Hone Heke, cut down the previous four (between 1844-45) in protest.
• Russell Museum
  Displays on the early history of Maori and European contact in the Bay of Islands.
• Long Beach
  A beautiful stretch of sandy beach about 1km east of the township, and a popular spot for swimming and fishing during the summer.
• Duke of Marlborough Hotel
  A historic waterfront hotel and restaurant, and the first hotel to be licensed in New Zealand.
