Springfield, known as the ‘Gateway to the Alps’ is a tiny rural township, nestled on the Great Alpine Highway amongst stunning alpine peaks. the TranzAlpine train stops at Springfield daily, giving visitors the chance to pop in to the restored train station, which houses the Springfield Information Buro, station café and craft shop. In conjuction with The Simpsons movie release, Springfield unveiled a temporary town icon - a giant pink donut.
Skiers have a choice of five ski fields close to Springfield. Other adventure activities on offer include jet-boating, hiking, horse-back riding, 4WD safaris, and mountain biking. The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia films have locations in the area.
