Back in it's hey-day, St Bathans had a population of more than 2000 people, mostly searching for gold in the area. Today St Bathans, nestled below the Hawkdun Range and Dunstan Mountains in the
Central Otago foothills, is the definition of peaceful.
Little has changed around town since the goldmining days and there are few places that have retained their historical charm like this small town. In St Bathans, both the post office and the reputedly haunted Vulcan Hotel, are still in business. The adobe buildings - made from sun-dried mud-brick are common throughout Otago and are very cute.
St Bathans is 60km northeast of the larger town of
Alexandra, with
Queenstown and
Dunedin nearby as well.
