  • Kiwi Spotting on Ocean Beach
    Tours take visitors to Ocean Beach, where the flightless Stewart Island kiwi (a sub-species of the brown kiwi) can be seen foraging for sandhoppers.
  • Ulva Island
    This small island in Paterson Inlet is a predator-free bird sanctuary, with kaka, weka, kereru (NZ pigeon), bellbirds and tui. Walking tracks intersect stands of native trees including rata, totora and rimu.
  • Walks
    The island has some well-developed tracks and huts in the north, including the three-day circular Rakiura Track and the ten-day North West Circuit. Shorter walks around Halfmoon Bay include the 15min walk to Observation Rock and a track to Ackers Point, past Harrold Bay. Seals, penguins and shearwaters can be seen near the rocks. Walking pamphlets are available at the DOC Visitor Information Centre.
  • Rakiura Museum
    Located on Ayr Street, the museum features exhibits of the island's early sealing, whaling, tin mining and timber milling days. There is a collection of shipping memorabilia and photos, and interesting displays of Maori heritage, including a collection of stone adzes traded with early whalers.
  • Acker's Stone House
    Some 3km north-east of town at Harrold Bay, this is one of New Zealand's oldest surviving stone buildings, built by Lewis Acker in about 1835.
  • The Fernery
    A craft shop and art gallery south of town, growing hen-and-chicken ferns.
  • Adventure operators offer a mix of guided or unguided cruising, hunting and hiking.
