A region rich in Maori and European history, Taranaki takes its name from the majestic Mount Taranaki/Egmont, which towers 2518m above Egmont National Park. The park provides many scenic and action activities in a region renowned for its surf beaches and verdant farmland.

New Plymouth, Taranaki's largest city, is adorned with many lovely gardens and parks. Dubbed the 'Garden of New Zealand', the region is also famous for its magnificent rhododendrons, with the annual Rhododendron Festival drawing the crowds in October and November. A string of fine surf beaches stretch down Taranaki's coast. Hawera is the principal town of South Taranaki, while the towns of Inglewood and Stratford provide handy access to Egmont National Park.
