Taupiri Travel Guide

Taupiri accommodation, Taupiri activities and attractions, Taupiri maps, transportation to and around Taupiri - the ALL NEW Jasons Taupiri Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Taupiri.

Nestled at the foot of Taupiri Mountain, just north of historic Ngaruawahia, Taupiri village has strong cultural ties for Waikato Maori. Taupiri mountain is the Waikato’s most sacred burial ground, and it is here that many notable Maori kings and leaders are buried. As well as the rich local history, there is plenty to see and do in the lush Waikato countryside around Taupiri, including horse riding, golf, garden rambles, historic homesteads, nature forest reserves, wine trails and cultural heritage tours.

For excellent views of the Waikato Basin, take the bush loop track to the summit of Taupiri (but steer clear of the sacred burial ground on the slope facing State Highway One). Bushwalkers will also enjoy Hakarimata Reserve, on the slopes of the Hakarimata Range, which has three well-marked tracks and fine stands of native trees including rimu and giant kauri. The nearby Waingaro Hot springs (west of Ngaruawahia) are ideal for a relaxing soak after a day's sightseeing.
