Things to Do in Te Anau

• Lake Te Anau
  The largest lake in the South Island and the second largest in New Zealand, covering 334 square kilometres. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves and Aurora Caves - massive limestone caverns deep in the Murchison Mountains - lie along the western shoreline. 
• Te Anau Glowworm Caves
  Visit these huge limestone caves on a scenic cruise across the lake. Tour the Cavern House and an explore the caves on foot and by punt, taking in waterfalls and an impressive glowworm grotto.
• Murchison Mountains
  This beautiful wilderness area is home to one of New Zealand's rarest birds, the flightless takahe.
• Te Anau Wildlife Centre
  Just outside Te Anau en route to Manapouri, the centre houses a variety of native birds, including the takahe.
• Walking
  The town has a well deserved reputation as New Zealand's walking capital and is especially popular with walkers during the summer. It is the starting point for some of the country's most famous hikes, including the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks, which are part of Fiordland National Park.
• Adventure
  Hunting, fishing, horse riding and golf can also be enjoyed from the town.
• Fiordland National Park
  This stunning park is part of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site and holds some of New Zealand's most magnificent scenery, including the Milford Sound, Mitre Peak, Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri and Sutherland Falls. • Milford Sound Overnight Cruises
  One of New Zealand's most popular tourist destinations, this fiord is famous for the towering Mitre Peak (1695m), which juts from the Sound's serene waters.
