Known as the Gateway to the
Coromandel, Thames is the region's largest town and an excellent base for exploring this beautiful part of New Zealand. Once a bustling gold town, Thames retains the aura of its early goldmining days. A 19th-century stamper battery, a steam boiler and the Thames School of Mines and Museum give a colourful insight to the region's goldmining history.
Between 1876 and 1924, some 1500 mines recovered 70 tons of gold and silver bullion from the region. Thames was home to about 20,000 miners during that time, many of whom spent their earnings at the 100 hotels that were said to crowd its main street. South-east of the town is the beautiful Kauaeranga Valley, with its hiking tracks and historic kauri dams. Heading northwards along the magnificent Pohutukawa Coast is a string of picturesque villages backed by the Coromandel Ranges, including Te Puru, Waiomu, Tapu,
Te Mata and Kirita Bay.
