Things to Do in Turangi

• Fishing
  The best months for brown trout are February to March, while June to September are good for rainbow trout. All anglers require a fishing licence. Tongariro Guides offer tuition and guiding.
• Tongariro Trout Centre
  A trout hatchery run by the Department of Conservation, with an underwater viewing area, picnic spots and keeping ponds. Located 5km south of Turangi (free entry).
• Rafting
  Tongariro River is renowned for its excellent rafting. The river offers Grade I-III rapids, with whitewater kayaking also available. There are Grade V rapids on the nearby Wairoa, Kaituna, Rangitaiki and Mohaka Rivers, with opportunities for raft fishing. Rafting trips can be arranged at Turangi Visitor Centre.
• Tongariro National Park
  This beautiful World Heritage area is a haven for hikers and mountainbikers during summer, and skiers in winter. It is dominated by three active volcanoes – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
• Ski Areas
  The Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino ski areas offer world-class skiing on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
• Walks
  Popular walks in the area include the Tongariro River Loop Track (1hr), the Te Ponanga Saddle (15min return), Lake Rotopounamu (2hrs) – famous for its birdlife, and the Tongariro River Walkway (3hrs return).
• Kaimanawa Forest Park
  A rugged park offering hikes and bushwalks, hunting and fishing.
• Horse Treks
  Kiwi Outback Horse Trek conducts two hour and half-day tours. The company also offers 4WD safaris, rafting and other adventure activities.
