Located near the Twizel River in
South Canterbury's Mackenzie Basin, Twizel is an ideal base for exploring the wild Mackenzie Country. Built in 1968 as a support town for the Upper Waitaki hydro project, Twizel is known for its beautiful trees, hot summers and crisp winters. The nearby lakes and rivers are enjoyed as venues for many watersports such as canoeing, swimming, windsurfing, fishing and waterskiing, while Lake Ruataniwha provides an international rowing venue.
During winter, conditions are perfect for iceskating and Twizel serves as a base for skiing at the slopes of
Ohau skifield. Nearby Lake Ohau is known for its walking tracks and fishing, while Lake Benmore is popular with boaties. Salmon fishing is excellent in the region's rivers, and hunters can track thar, chamois and deer. Camping safaris, mountain biking and helibiking are on offer, along with bushwalks in the Ohau Forest Range and
