Things to Do in Twizel

• Mount Cook National Park
  This magnificent alpine region embraces ice, snow, rock, subalpine scrub, tussock and riverbed. More than a third of the park is permanent snow and glacier ice. The park contains 28 peaks which exceed 3000m, including New Zealand's highest mountain, Mount Cook. Operators include Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters and High Country Expeditions.
• Mackenzie Country
  A wild tract of tussock-covered hill country, stretching to the foothills of the Southern Alps. The region's lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing. Contact the Information Centre for more details.
• Black Stilt Breeding Centre
  The centre offers visitors a chance to see the world's rarest wading bird, the kaki or black stilt, whose natural habitat is the swamps and braided riverbeds of the South Island. At the centre, the birds are hand-reared until they are old enough to be released into the wild. Guided tours are available and incorporate the breeding aviaries.
• Ohau Skifield
  A 40min drive from Twizel, this small skifield has beautiful views over Lake Ohau and is open July to mid-October.
• Lake Ohau & Ohau Forest Range
  Popular for camping, hiking, boating and fishing during summer, with snow sports at the nearby skifield during winter. The range provides access to the High Country for hunters and hikers.
• Lake Benmore
  The largest man-made lake in New Zealand was formed by the construction of the dam at Benmore Hydro. Launch trips are available to Falston Station and Black Jack's Point, and there is iceskating during winter.
