Things to Do in Upper Hutt

• Staglands Wildlife Reserve
  Akatarawa Forest is ideal for picnicking, hiking and swimming, and is also home to Staglands Wildlife Reserve, a 10 hectare reserve set in park-like surrounds. Visitors can stroll through aviaries and enclosures showcasing native and exotic wildlife. 
• H20xtream
  One of the only wave pools in the Wellington area, with a rapid river ride, water slide and lane swimming.
• Golder Cottage Museum
  Built in 1876, this historic cottage is now a museum and a unique time capsule of the past.
• Silverstream Steam Railway
  This vintage collection of steam trains is New Zealand's largest collection of working locomotives. Rides are available.
• Giant Pole Swing
  Jump from the height of a five-storey building.
• Historic Buildings
  Heritage buildings include the Blockhouse, built in 1860 as a place of protection for European settlers, and the Church of St John the Evangelist - the city's oldest church, built in 1863.
• Horse Treks
  Mount Devine Horse Trekking offers rides through native bush offering views of Wellington and the Hutt Valley. Twilight rides are available during summer.
• Rimutaka Forest Park
  A rugged mountain range offering opportunities for mountain biking, horse trekking, hunting, hiking and whitewater rafting. There is a campsite, picnic and barbecue facilities, and a selection of walking tracks of varying lengths. Details of walks can be found at the DOC Centre.
• Rimutaka Incline
  This 5-7hr walk follows a historic railway line which once carried trains between Wellington and the Wairarapa. The track can also be cycled, and is signposted 9km north of Upper Hutt.
• Kaitoke Regional Park
  16km north of Upper Hutt, the park offers camping, rafting, swimming, picnicking, and a range of walking tracks varying from 20 minutes to 6hrs.
