Waiheke Island Travel Guide
Waiheke Island accommodation, Waiheke Island activities and attractions, Waiheke Island maps, transportation to and around Waiheke Island - the ALL NEW Jasons Waiheke Island Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Waiheke Island.
Covering 93 square kilometres, Waiheke is the second-largest island (after
Great Barrier Island) in
Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. It is also one of the most beautiful, boasting sandy beaches, a warm climate, more than 30 boutique vineyards, bustling cafés and markets. Regular ferry services from Auckland (just 35 minutes) make it a popular holiday and day trip destination. The beautiful bush and sea views have also attracted many well known authors, sculptors, artists and potters, and there is a lively arts scene.
Waiheke Island's largest township is Oneroa, at the western end of the island. The long, sandy ocean beach is just a short walk from the township's bustling cafés, craft outlets and restaurants. Palm Beach occupies a pretty, sheltered cove, and at Onetangi there is a long sandy beach popular for swimming, surfing and other water-based activities. Walking is an excellent way to see the island - there are many designated walkways including a coastal track from Oneroa Bay to

Palm Beach. Sea kayaking around the island’s bays is another way to explore the stunning coastline. Horse riding, cycle hire and scenic flights are also available. Local buses and tour operators meet the ferries, which dock at Matiatia.
