Waiheke Island RetraVision Jassy Dean Trust Garden Safari
November 2007
Each November, Waiheke Island's annual garden safari provides a fascinating chance to see behind the hedges of some of the island's most beautiful gardens, from clifftop hidewaways with spectacular coastal views, to contemporary courtyard gardens. There is a wonderful collection of garden art by some of NZ's leading artists and sculptors, plus refreshments, food and music on hand at selected venues. This popular event is spread over two days, and with a self-guide map, you have the freedom to visit as many of the gardens (about 20 in all) as you like. Olive fans can also stop by at at Rangihoua Estate for the Everything Olive Festival, which is held on the same weekend as the garden safari.
Set in the sparkling waters of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf,
Waiheke Island is just a short ferry ride from either Downtown Auckland or Half Moon Bay in Howick. Once you're there, you'll find an eclectic mix of activities to keep you entertained, from vineyard tours, art trails and kayaking safaris to fine dining at world-class wineries. Pack a picnic and swim at one of the beautiful beaches, enjoy a walking track around the stunning coastline, visit the dotterel sanctuary at Whakanewha Regional Park, or hire a scooter and explore the villages and vineyards.
