Lying next to the rugged Coromandel Ranges, the small town of Waihi has a century of quartz-mining history. Gold is still mined here today and the Waihi Gold Mining Company conducts weekday tours of its open pit operation. There are displays at the Goldmine Information Office or you can learn more about the colourful history of goldmining at the museum.
Waihi has several lovely riverside walkways and a vintage railway that operates daily to Waikino, a historic goldmining community at the eastern end of the beautiful Karangahake Gorge. Waihi enjoys a lively local arts scene, and there is surfing at nearby
Waihi Beach, 11km from town. The small settlement of Whiritoa, just north of Waihi, has excellent fishing. Twenty minutes drive to the south of Waihi is the town of
Katikati, known for the colourful murals which decorate its buildings.
