  • Waitomo Caves
    The Waikato's best known attraction, the caves are renowned for their vast caverns full of eerie stalactitie and stalagmite formations, and the spectacular glow-worm grotto. Guided walking, blackwater rafting, and boat tours are available.
  • Otorohanga Kiwi House
    The Kiwi House displays New Zealand's national icon, the flightless Kiwi, in one of NZ's largest kiwi-breeding sanctuaries.  You can also view other rare birds and the prehistoric tuatara (native lizard).  The Kiwi House is set in 2.4ha of native bush 59km south of Hamilton.
  • Ngaruawahia
    The oldest settlement in the Waikato and and the meeting place of the Waikato and Waipa rivers.  Ngaruawahia is home to the impressive Turangawaewae Marae, the official residence of the Maori King.

  • Bridal Veil Falls
    This spectacular 55m cascade near Raglan is set in a beautiful native bush reserve. There are fine views from the top and base of the falls.
  • Mt Pirongia Forest Park
    West of Raglan, this 13,000ha park contains some excellent walking tracks. The climb to the summit of Mt Pirongia (959m) rewards walkers with panoramic views of the Waikato region, as do the Te Toto and Wairake tracks up Mt Karioi.
  • Te Aroha & Matamata - Heritage seekers will appreciate the Edwardian character of these towns, which are also big on adventure activities.
  • Te Aroha Domain
    Relax in the Te Aroha Mineral Pools, fed from thermal springs at the base of Mt Te Aroha.
  • Te Awamutu
    Known as New Zealand's Rose Town, and therefore famous for its rose gardens, which feature more than 2000 rosebuds. An annual rose show is held in November.  Te Awamutu is the birthplace of Tim and Neil Finn, from the rock bands Split Enz and Crowded House.
  • Tirau 
    Home to a host of corrugated iron creatures including buildings that are New Zealand's largest dog and sheep structures, and an antique shopper's delight.
  • Vilagrad Wines
    Waikato's oldest winery, founded at Ohaupo, offers tours and wine tasting, with lunches on Sundays.
  • Woodlands Historic Homestead
    An original homestead dating from 1872 and a living legacy of early rural Waikato. The grounds offer walks through woodland and formal floral gardens.
