Things to Do in Waikouaiti

• Beach
  At the local beach, which is both beautiful and very safe, you can go fishing, surfing and swimming. The dunes were consolidated around the turn of the 19th century by sowing grass and later by planting pines.
• Karitane lookout
  A lookout above Karitane provides amazing views of the Karitane and Waikouaiti bays.
• Tavora Nature Reserve
  The nearby 12-hectare Tavora Nature Reserve is being restored as a habitat for yellow-eyed penguins. The local inland scenery is quite interesting with tussock grass and rocky outcrops.
• Historic buildings
  There are many historic buildings from the pioneer days including the Presbyterian Church (1863), St John's Church (1858, Anglican) and St Anne's Church (1871, Roman Catholic). The old farmstead of Matanaka at the north end of the bay also dates from this period.
• Waikouaiti Settlers Museum
  The Early Settlers Museum, housed in a former bank dating from the turn of the 19th century, contains mementos of the early settlement.
