Things to Do in Waimate

• The White Horse
  A huge white horse has been concreted into the hillside at Waimate as a tribute to the Clydesdale horses that were used to break the surrounding land into grass.
• Wallabies
  If you thought Australia was the only country with wallabies, you'd be wrong. These cute little animals were first introduced to this part of the country in 1870. It turns out they felt quite comfortable here, and now occupy 350,000 hectares of land.
• Walks
  There are plenty of walks to enjoy in the area, each taking you through different terrain, showing you the diverse beauty of the area.
• Gunns Bush is a 1.5 hour track through native bush, where you will hear different types of birdlife and see the beautiful native trees that grow here.
• Kelceys Bush has three different tracks, ranging from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours. In this bush, you will again hear the many birds that call this bush home, and you may even come across a wallaby.
• Whitehorse Walkway is a 2.5 hour walk which gives you beautiful views of the district and the mountains in the distance.
• Mt Nimrod Reserve has a track and can take 3-4 hours. This diverse track can be difficult in places, but the views are amazing as you walk through the forest and around the gorge up to the highest points.
• Golf
  The local 18-hole, par 72 golf course is very attractive with many ornamental trees.
• Mountain biking
  There are various mountain bike trails in and around the town catering for a range of levels.
• Museum
  Discover the history of Waimate at the local museum. Here, there are many exhibitions including horse drawn carriages and old buildings.
