Things to Do in Wairoa

• Te Urewera National Park
  The country's third largest national park contains the largest untouched stretch of native forest in New Zealand. Operators include Waikaremoana Guided Tours, which offers guided hunting and fishing trips.
• Lake Waikaremoana
  Located at the park's southeastern corner, this beautiful lake is 19km long and 10km across, covering 55sq km. The area is a popular scenic, fishing and hunting resort, with walking and hiking through the surrounding native bush, and launch excursions on the lake. The 46km track which circles the lake is one of the North Island's most popular walks.
• Portland Lighthouse
  The town's solid kauri lighthouse was in use at Portland Island from 1878 until the mid-1950s, when it was moved to its current resting place down by the river.
• Whakaki Lagoon
  A wetlands area renowned for its birdlife, located 10km east of the town.
• Clonkeen Caves & Country Retreat
  Limestone caves located 40km north-east of Wairoa, with guided tours offered by arrangement.
• Kahungunu Community Marae
  A unique carved memorial marae 36km west of Wairoa, and the largest in New Zealand. Tours can be conducted by arrangement.
• Morere Reserve & Morere Hot Springs
  Located 40km north-east of Wairoa, this 365ha reserve contains one of the last remaining tracts of coastal native forest and incorporates Morere Hot Springs.
