  • Waitangi National Trust
Maori Carving, Waitangi National TrustThis historic 506ha reserve was the site where New Zealand's founding document, The Treaty of Waitangi, was signed on 6 February 1840. The beautiful grounds contain the Treaty House, Whare Runanga (a carved meeting house), and the Maori canoe Ngatokimatawhaorua. A walking track passes through the mangrove forest and leads to nearby Haruru Falls.
  • The Treaty House
Located on the lawns of the reserve with beautiful views to the bay, the Georgian-style Treaty House was built in 1832 for James Busby, a pioneer settler from New South Wales. The Waitangi Treaty was signed here eight years later. The house was purchased by former Governor Lord Bledisloe in 1932, and gifted to the nation. It houses a facsimile of the Treaty of Waitangi, a small collection of Maori artefacts, and paintings and photos connected to early colonial days.
  • The Meeting House & Canoe
Built in 1940 for the centennial celebrations, this elaborately carved Maori Whare Runanga (meeting house) commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Next to the meeting house is the 37m long waka taua (war canoe), Ngatokimatawhaorua, which the tribes of Northland presented to the nation in 1940.
