The
Waitomo Caves are Waitomo district’s most famous attraction, their yawning limestone caverns full of amazing formations lit by the pin-prick lights of thousands of glowworms. You can take a guided tour to admire the magical effect in the glowworm grotto, while the more adventurous can try their hand at cave tubing or abseiling into one of the cavernous chambers. Just up the road are the beautiful Aranui and Ruakura caves, with their underground streams and stunning limestone formations.
Nearby
Otorohanga is famous for its Kiwi House, while the country towns of
Piopio and
Te Kuiti are surrounded by picturesque native bush. Out on coast of the Waitomo District, the sleepy harbour town of
Kawhia is a favourite with holidaymakers for its sheltered harbour and magnificent ocean beach. Other activities in the Waitomo District include farm shows, horse treks, bushwalks, quad biking and golf, or go rafting and fishing on the region’s rivers.
