Waitomo Travel Guide
Waitomo accommodation, Waitomo activities and attractions, Waitomo maps, transportation to and around Waitomo - the ALL NEW Jasons Waitomo Destination Travel Guide is your complete visitor guide for Waitomo.
The Waitomo Caves are one of New Zealand's best loved attractions, their vast caverns full of eerie stalactite and stalagmite formations lit by thousands of glowworms. Waitomo Cave houses the magnificent glowworm grotto, an experience that's eerily magical. You'll see the cave roof above you pricked with a million tiny pin-points of light as you drift across the darkness in a small punt. Just up the road, you can visit beautiful Aranui Cave and the recently opened
Ruakuri (Den of Dogs), with its spectacular spiral staircase (man-made) winding down into the depths.
You can enjoy a leisurely guided
walking tour to admire the glowworms, while daredevils can set their pulses racing with
blackwater rafting, tubing and abseiling packages. Above ground, you'll find just as many activities to enjoy in
Waitomo District, with horse treks and scenic walks through the rolling Waikato countryside, as well as quad bike safaris, golf and fishing. The Museum of Caves has free pamphlets detailing bushwalks in the Waitomo area, including a 15 minute walk from Aranui Cave to a grove of California redwood trees.
