Things to Do in Waitomo

• Waitomo Caves & Cave Tours
  Guided boat and walking tours offer close-up views of the glowworm grotto. Adventure options for exploring the caves include cave tubing, abseiling, rappelling and waterfall climbs.
• Waitomo Museum of Caves
  A museum and Visitor Information Centre detailing the history of the caves and how they were formed. Highlights include a cave model, interactive displays, an audiovisual show, videos, a cave crawl and moa fossils that were found in the caves.
• Waitomo Walkway
  A scenic 5km three-hour walk leaves from opposite the Visitor Information Centre and follows Waitomo Stream through farmland to the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. A 30-minute walk through the reserve follows the stream up to a striking natural limestone bridge.
• Other Walks
  The Opapaka Pa Bush Walk (1hr return) opposite the Abseil Inn leads to a pre-European pa (fort) site on a hill, and there are more walks at Tawarau Forest, west of Waitomo village. Ask at the Information Centre for walking options.
• Woodlyn Park
  Farm shows can be experienced at Woodlyn Park, 600m up the Waitomo Road. This lively pioneer heritage show Woodlyn Park’s pioneer heritage show brings New Zealand’s rural culture to life with working farm dogs, bulls, sheep, pigs and a trained possum, as well as shearing and wood chopping demonstrations.
• Mangapohue Natural Bridge & Marokopa Falls
  Drive west of Waitomo (3-4hrs return, with stops) to view this giant natural limestone bridge and the dramatic, multi-tiered falls.
