Discover Wanganui

Cruise on the P S WaimarieStretching along the banks of the historic Whanganui River, surrounded by bush-clad valleys and steep hills, Wanganui is renowned for its rich cultural history and scenic beauty. When the first Maori settlers arrived here, they planted their crops and began to trade along the banks of the Whanganui River, and today, the river remains the heartbeat of the region.

Back at the turn of the 20th century, at the height of the riverboat era, hundreds of riverboats plied its busy waters. Today, you can still see Join the mail tourthe sights from the well-worn decks of an original paddleboat. The PS Waimarie  – New Zealand’s last coal-fired paddle steamer – makes the journey up river and back, its wheel churning the waters and its funnel belching smoke as the river slips slowly by.

The historic Whanganui River Road provides another leisurely option for exploring the sights. For a different take on local life, you can Jet boat ridejoin the mailman on the Whanganui River Road Mail Tour  as he delivers supplies and mail. There’s plenty of time to stop and chat as you follow the winding path of the river along the valley, past marae, the Operiki Gardens, the Jerusalem Catholic Church Mission and the old Kawana Flour Mill.

You can, of course, go a bit faster with Whanganui River Adventures. This scenic jetboat ride takes you upriver from Pipiriki, through bush clad valleys and steep gorges draped with ferns. An easy 40 minute bush walk brings you to the aptly-named Bridge to Nowhere – a well known local landmark.

Whanganui Regional MuseumBack in town, there are plenty of cultural highlights to enjoy as well.
