The historic village of Warkworth is the hub of the Kowhai Coast, which extends from Wenderholm in the south to
Pakiri Beach in the north. Situated on the banks of the Mahurangi River, this pretty town is noted for its trees, particularly for kowhai. The Warkworth township has some delightful cafés, galleries and craft outlets, and hosts the region's annual Kowhai Festival, a showcase of the region's wine, food, music and crafts.
There are several nearby wineries on the road to
Leigh, which also accesses the surf beaches of
Pakiri and Omaha, and the Goat Island marine reserve. The Parry Kauri Park on the outskirts of town has some pleasant forest walks. Of interest, too, is the Earth Satellite Station, 6km south of Warkworth, and
Sheepworld, 4km north. East of Warkworth is the
Sandspit, where ferry services leave for
Kawau Island, with its stately mansion. The town is within easy reach of Kowhai District's three regional parks – Wenderholm, Mahurangi and Tawharanui – which provide excellent boating, walking and watersports. Another good excursion is the historic settlement of
Puhoi and its famous pub.
