The Mahurangi River meanders through the charming colonial village of Warkworth, at the heart of the Kowhai Coast. Warkworth is famous for its kowhai trees and with its lovely riverside setting, it makes a delightful place to stop and stay. Wander the streets and explore the galleries, shops and craft outlets or relax at one of the riverside cafes. Afterwards, you can stroll along the boardwalk and watch the river life go by, or take a walk through the native bush. The Parry Kauri Park on the outskirts of town has some beautiful forest walks.
The Earth Satellite Station, just 6km out of town, is well worth a visit, or head to
Sheepworld Farm & Nature Park for scenic walking trails, a sheep and dog show, an eco discovery trail and a cafe and picnic area. Just east of Warkworth is
Sandspit, where the ferry leaves for tranquil
Kawau Island and its stately mansion house. Warkworth is also on the doorstep of three regional parks – Wenderholm, Mahurangi and Tawharanui – with beautiful beaches and scenic walking trails just waiting to be discovered. The historic settlement of
Puhoi also makes a charming excursion, with its famous pub and mouth watering local cheese.
