Moana Travel Guide
This small town is on the shores of Lake Brunner on the
West Coast, 37km from
Greymouth. The lake and its tributaries offer year-round trout fishing, although the prime season runs from October to April. There are plenty of walks in the vicinity, and the town has a camping grounds and a licensed hotel.
Attractions:
- Lake Brunner
The largest lake in Westland, with an area of 41sq km, Brunner offers good boating, swimming and trout and eel fishing. The lake can be reached from Jacksons or Kumara on the Arthur's Pass Road.
- Valenski Scenic Reserve
The Arnold River footbridge offers access to this park, with 59ha of native bush, trees and birdlife.
- Moana Kiwi House & Conservation Park
View Kiwi and other wildlife in its natural surroundings, including the white heron (kotuku). The Valenski Walk near the camping grounds leads through beautiful stands of native totara, rimu and kahikatea.
- Kotuku Pottery
Domestic and sculptural works featuring salt-glazed and coal-fired pottery.
- Brunner Industrial Site
A collection of historic brickworks and coke ovens.
