Ski & Board Whakapapa

On the broad north-western slopes of
Mount Ruapehu,
Whakapapa and neighbouring
Turoa form New Zealand's largest developed ski area, with 1800 hectares of awesome lift-accessed terrain.
Whakapapa Ski Area has more than 65 trails to enjoy, spread across 1050 hectares. There is fantastic skiing and boarding for all levels, with a dedicated beginner's area at Happy Valley, 30 groomed trails and spectacular lift-accessed backcountry terrain which intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders will love. The more adventurous can get to grips with the pinnacles backcountry - a double black diamond area that also hosts the mountain's annual Extreme Competition in September.
Whakapapa is a 4hr drive from
Auckland, a 2hr drive from
Rotorua and a 1.25hr drive from
Lake Taupo. The access road is fully sealed and suitable for campervans - a chain fitting service is available. Mountain Shuttle provides a daily coach service to Whakapapa Ski Area from Whakapapa Village, leaving from Whakapapa Holiday Park every hour from 8.30am. Your lift pass provides access to both Whakapapa and Turoa ski areas.
