Things to Do in Whakatane

• White Island Tours (Whakaari)
  New Zealand's only marine volcano is located 50km offshore of Whakatane. About 6km in circumference, the island is a reserve and bird sanctuary. The remains of an old sulphur mine destroyed in the 1914 eruption can still be seen. Visiting the island, with its sulphur holes and geysers, has been likened to walking on the moon.  White Island Tours operate excursions to the island.
• Dive White (Island)
  The diving at White island is world class giving you excellent visibility, prolific fish life and volcanic terrain to see.
• Fishing
  Big game fishing is one of the area's key attractions, with numerous fish and dive charters on offer. Operators include Baker Marine Charters, MV Enchanter, Charmaine Charters and Kohi Point Yacht Charters.
• Swimming with the dolphins
  Dolphins Down Under offer swimming with the dolphins, scuba dives and snorkel tours.
• Walks
  An interesting town walk (2.5hrs) takes in historic sites, including Muriwai's Cave and Puketapu Lookout. Other walks include the White Pine bushwalk, Ohope bushwalk, Matata and Latham's Tracks. A 3.5hr walk to Kohi Point visits the site of Toi's Pa (Kapua te Rangi), one of the oldest in New Zealand.
• Adventure sports
  Kiwi Jetboat Tours offer jetboating up the Rangitaiki River, while Motu River Rafting and Wet 'n' Wild offer whitewater rafting on the Motu River.
• Whakatane Museum & Gallery
  Displays about the Eastern Bay of Plenty alongside a reference collection of photographs, archives and books.
• Awakeri Hot Springs
  A holiday park with a thermal swimming pool, picnic and BBQ facilities, located 13km southwest of the town.
• Whakatane Golf Club
  An 18-hole course with full equipment and cart hire.
