White Island
White Island is New Zealand's only marine volcano and the most consistently active with ash showers, boiling pools, gas vents, sulphur holes and geysers. Sulphur deposits give the island its white hue. The privately-owned island lies 48km offshore and has been continuously active for more than 150,000 years. About 70% of the volcano is underneath the sea, making it the largest volcanic structure in the country. The island is also home to the largest gannet colony in New Zealand.
Some 10,000 visitors call at the island annually to view the volcano and explore the remains of a sulphur mining operation. The island is most easily accessed from Whakatane, with a number of charter and diving options offered.
